0D/1D simulation is a much faster way to simulate and analyze flow and combustion characteristics. For me, it has been the primary workflow for engine design before taking on more advanced 2D/3D CFD. Although 0D/1D simulation has less fidelity, it can still be extremely accurate to get you 80-90% of the way there, with advanced CFD and combustion analysis taking up the last 10-20%. An idea quoted by Tom Cargill of Bell Labs called the ninety-ninety rule.
